The Vocational Qualification in Restaurant and Catering Services gives you a strong foundation in cooking, from basic kitchen tasks to à la carte dishes and menu planning. The language of instruction is English, and the program also includes extensive Finnish language studies.
TARGET GROUP AND ADMISSION CRITERIA
This training is intended for unemployed jobseekers who are interested in working as cooks in the restaurant sector. The studies require normal work ability, good physical fitness, and strong communication skills.
Applicants must have good English language skills. Language proficiency will be assessed during the interview.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The qualification consists of 180 competence points (cp), including 145 cp of vocational units (e.g. Preparing lunch dishes 40 cp and Preparing plated dishes 25 cp) and 35 cp of common units, such as language studies, mathematics, and civic skills. The duration of the studies is two (2) years.
Vocational studies are carried out through in-person teaching in classrooms, in teaching kitchens and in the kitchen of Vamia’s Restaurant Silveria. The program also includes several on-the-job learning periods in restaurants outside the school. Students may also have the opportunity to participate in an international exchange and learn about the food and restaurant culture of another country.
The studies of common units are mainly completed independently, for example through Moodle courses. Finnish language lessons, however, are taught in person.

SELECTION EVENTS
Interviews will be held between 25 –27 December 2026 at the Ostrobothnia Employment Services office in the Government Building (Virastotalo). Invitations to interviews will be sent via text message.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
This labor market training is intended primarily for unemployed or at-risk-of-unemployment clients of the Ostrobothnia Employment Area with an active job search. The training is free of charge for participants. During the training period, students may be eligible for unemployment benefits and a daily allowance for expenses.
