Vocational Qualification in Mechanical Engineering and Production Technology, Plater-welder

This study program is designed primarily for applicants who are residents of the Vaasa region or elsewhere in Finland, or for citizens of another EU/EEA country. It is also important that the applicant is interested in becoming professional plater-welder.
If there are enough study places available, others may also apply for the training. The tuition fee for no EU/EEA students for Plater-welder program is 11 100 euros/study year. More information >>
Requirements
The applicant needs to
- be at least 18 years of age when the studies start. There is no upper age limit.
- have at least education equivalent to Finnish basic education of nine years.
- have sufficient English language skills so you need to have at least one of these:
- The minimum score required for the Duolingo English Test is 85 points
- Finnish Matriculation Examination: English advanced syllabus with a minimum grade B
- The whole International Baccalaureate diploma or International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme (IBCP) completed in English
- National Certificate of Language Proficiency (YKI) English Grade 3 or higher
- Upper secondary degree completed in English in Finland
- A minimum grade of 8 in English on the Finnish basic education certificate.
Application process, start date and duration:
Application period: 2 March – 31 March 2026.
Selection process: All eligible applicants will have online interview via Microsoft Teams. The student selection is made based on those interviews.
Start of studies: 4 August 2026.
Costs and duration of studies
The study program is free of charge for citizens of EU and EEA countries.
The duration of studies is approximately two years, in accordance with your Personal Competence Development Plan (PCDP). Studies are full-time and mainly daytime studies.
The tuition fee for no EU/EEA students for Plater-welder program is 11 000 euros/study year.
Programme description and implementation
The qualification consists of Vocational Units (145 competence points) and Common Units (35 competence points).

The vocational units are taught on campus in daily contact lessons, excluding holiday periods. Attendance in face‑to‑face instruction is both required and mandatory. The training emphasizes practical skills and real work tasks in the field. The studies include also on-the-job learning which takes place in the companies in Vaasa region.
The courses of Common Units are mainly completed as independent Moodle-based online studies.
